14 April

Reflection was a an element I enjoyed in Milan and something to watch out for come autumn.

It is no secret that Flora brings character to a space through colour. It is at this time of year you feel like bringing colour and smell and recreating the sense of outdoors indoors. \on a recent visit I finally went into Sagrada Familia and realised this could be replicated in a more literal way. When I watched Lord of the Rings I said to the unfortunate person who had to suffer watching a film with a talker, that if could live anywhere in middle earth is would definitely be Mirkwood and mirkwood came alive for me while standing in the middle of that cathedral.

Salon del Mobile had a different feel this year. There was more excitement and general sense of optimism. It may have been because it was beautiful weather for the whole week. There was bright sunshine all week so when there is great reason to be outside there remained a pull to keep you indoors. Next year and Solon del Mobile will be another lighting year and the designers of 2014 had a great offering of what is to come. Scattered in showrooms across Milan were Light Installations leaving audiences salivating for next years offering.

Not everything has to look as it is imagined. With some imagination and a low budget you could make an equal level of impact with very little fuss.

Tile Me Up!

Okay the title of my piece probably has more to do with me having seen rolling stones last weekend but none the less I have reconnected with my long dormant love of this ceramics and loud colours.

With Scandinavian design dominating, the interior industry (thank you Ikea) a resent trip to Morocco reminded me there are still places that love colours and literally drape everywhere creating a canopy mixing dark with light and colour with shadow.

Summer Blues

20 May

This season colour is blue in all its cool glory. Versatile and suitable in all fabrics and materials, it has a great way of popping in any surrounding while not deterring from the overall effect. Classic and enduring no one does not like the colour blue.

I know, who goes to fat Duck and stares at the plates? But you see 14 courses; each one had a different plate. Some were plain, some colourful and some unconventional for the more unusual courses (e.g. Sounds of the sea). They all had simplicity about them. I guess to allow for all manner of food but I have always preferred this for my dining. Decorates the food, without distraction or making it look unappetising. It might be the get ready for the summer diet I am on which hs had me thinking about food A LOT. It incorporates a lot of salad and fish, which can be off putting on an ugly plate, especially when all you want is a big slab of steak drizzled in… I digress. Take a look at some of my Fat Duck favourites and of course Key favourites!

It was the best of times; it was the worst of times… namely the weather. Snow had rendered Europe impossible. 200 flights cancelled out of Heathrow alone. Winter had a tight grip on London and the temptation to stay in my house was increasingly difficult to resist!  But braving the elements proved worth while. Paris did not dissapoint, and the temperatures did not cool the designers at Maison et Objet. Here it was summer! With outdoor fireplaces, comfy cushions and seats for enjoying the sun (for when it finally returns).  Mobex Outdoor have produced my summer favourite (so far) and this months ‘if I had the space…’

I sat at the Saharian fire table in the -1 degrees temperature feeling pretty toasty. Okay I still had my coat on but it is designed for spring summer and may still be effective at temperatures above freezing. The French outdoor company have a wonderful collection of garden/patio fire tables. Table Saharian is a table with generous dimensions. The center consists of a stainless steel can contain a fire. I didn't even mind spending the rest of the day smelling of wood fire. I found it strangely comforting, like a warm blanket.

Esewhere maison et Objet had set aside an area for which guests could reflect on their experience with a cafe surrounded by mirrors. Although, catching a glimpse of myself towards the end of the day was not welcomed!
